Still recommending it because if the pigs show up and kill the pigs everyone wins.
I got a chest freezer for $200. I freeze everything before or on its expiration date.
Sometimes if its mushy veggies I make a stock and freeze it for the next meal. If its too far gone i have a compost jar in the kitchen and a bin outside.
I started a garden and an edible native hedge this year. I have tea herbs and squash for free now and working on a seed propagation.
I started a coop mushroom grow with my neighbors since he felled some hardwood and I had the plan. The leftover mushrooms we dont eat will be either sold at market or made into liquid cultures.
Were talking about going in on a local half cow or pig. He says if my garden keeps growing we can buy the plot behind us together and start a farm. Would cut grocery costs a lot.
My wife and I have pantry weeks where we dont go grocery shopping, we eat whats in reserve, soak dry beans, thaw last weeks on sale chicken breast and pressure Cook em, make a flatbread and have some curry.
Instant pot helps too. Thinking about getting coturnix quail to feed good scraps to and get eggs out of. I can plant cover crops for em on the last strip of lawn I have.
It doesn’t have to be wasteful forever.
Seasm0ke@lemmy.worldto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Non-violent protests are 2x more likely to succeed and no non-violent movement that has involved more than 3.5% of a population has ever failed21·3 days agoIt did give the info needed to find this.
Violent campaigns on the other hand were defined as follows: “Violent resistance […] involves the use of force to physically harm or threaten to harm the opponent.” (Chenoweth/Shay 2020: 5). Violent campaign data was primarily collected from different databases including: The UCDP Armed Conflict Database, the Correlates of War database on intra-state wars (COW), Clodfelter’s encyclopedia of armed conflict (2002), and Kalev Sepp’s list of major counterinsurgency operations (2005) (Chenoweth/Shay 2020: 5). To note is that should a campaign at some point during its lifespan shift from a non-violent campaign to a violent one or vice versa, that this campaign is then coded as two separate campaigns (Chenoweth/Shay 2020: 7).
This led me to believe they are analysing in a vacuum but that would only really be true for the Philippines example.
This review is a fantastic in depth analysis of the data and outcomes when violent flanks (apparently the research term describing the parallel movements that are not nonviolent) are included.
https://www.annualreviews.org/content/journals/10.1146/annurev-polisci-051421-124128#f1
Two tables analyse the purported and contradictory outcomes of the flanks in different research projects and papers. The authors conclusions are interesting to me in that he or she believes them to reduce long term success and increase short and mid terms, and also poiints out other factors in table 3 that affect the outcomes. One thing eluded to is that the societies perception of the movements being majority violent or non violent is actually the determining factor in the outcome and that I agree with in societies that presuppose nonviolence as a determining factor for success. I imagine nonviolence is a lit less important when you see yourself as occupied by an external force.
Seasm0ke@lemmy.worldto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Non-violent protests are 2x more likely to succeed and no non-violent movement that has involved more than 3.5% of a population has ever failed1727·4 days agoThis is actually rewriting history.
The Philippines had multiple militant movements but notably the Reform the Armed Forces which had orchestrated and abandoned a coup that had popular support kicking off the protest movement.
Sudan was a military coup that overthrew bashir and then massacred protestors and was actually backed by American OSI NGOs.
Algiers street protests were illegal and they combined general strikes with police clashes and riots even though they were subjected to mass arrests.
For Ghandi MLK jr and others mentioned there were armed militant groups adding pressure. My take away is you need both approaches.
Without demonstrating the ability to defend your nonviolent protest with devastating results it just gets crushed. If you are militant with no populist public movement backing your ideals you get labeled as terrorists and assinated by the feds.

Seasm0ke@lemmy.worldto Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•Trump Voter Gets Choked Up After ICE Detains a Third of His StaffEnglish1·5 days agoThey will double down regardless of how I disagree with them. Nobody can force them to see the error of their ways through conversation. Sadly jt must be a reckoning. Im all for being there to pick up the pieces once they have the realization, but I believe words are not enough to bring that about in most cases.
Seasm0ke@lemmy.worldto Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•Trump Voter Gets Choked Up After ICE Detains a Third of His StaffEnglish2·5 days agoIn my experience it is impossible to change their minds through conversation. If at all possible it will take longer than is necessary for them to seize total control of the remaining institutions and perpetuate genocide.
These people do not listen to reason, every rational argument you may make that holds a mirror up and forces introspection will likely cause them to double Down - no matter how politely you do it. I do my part to plant the seed of doubt in them and walk away where possible but someone or something else has to water it. It is not a viable strategy when they are cheering and refeuling the orphan grinder for another go.
I believe we have to do all three to certain degrees. We certainly will not slaughter them or deport them en masse but we do need to physically resist - fight them when they attempt to enact their policies. These policies lead (and are leading right now) to ‘final solutions’. It is truly a matter of life and death for many. This is not overly dramatic trumps lackeys are openly using the military to invade States and enact his plans for ‘remigration’. He also openly plans to open an office of remigration to oversee his final solution.
This is a war they have started and it is our moral imperative to resist them by any means necessary. If we had resisted them physically back in the 2010s public punch a Nazi debate we’d be in a much better place today. It worked wonders for Richard Spencer, it would have worked for maga also but the mainstream successfully legitimized the right wing extremists and distanced them from their platform and supporters.
We are not responsible for their radicalization full stop. They are radicalizing themselves and being radicalized by others like them. They get there largely by mischaracterizations of situations and actions. They create an environment where they never need to admit fault or guilt or perform that u.comfortable work of bettering yourself and others. They create a world of delusions and wrap it tightly over their ears and eyes and anything you say that breaks through it reinforces that you are the enemy because you brought that fear to the surface. They will blame peaceful nonviolent resistors when the police kill them. They will dig up any little remark that may discredit the victim and if they do not find one they will invent one. They will label you a criminal for any reason if it assuages their guilt. we may as well earn it because it is going to happen.
We must show them our beliefs are strong and that we are confident in them by overwhelming them in public spaces. Every counter protest, every public event, every political race they should be provided an opportunity to look in that mirror and see what they’ve become. This is far more feasible and impactful then changing their minds in my opinion and it resists their final solutions from being given a platform. Yes they will claim any number of extraordinary things about the reason for their unpopularity but they will and have continued to do that from the start. Anti white, blood libel, enemy within etc, they will label outsiders regardless of their actions. You who want to convince them peacefully are also included.
For 3 maybe setting up a support group for those few nazis that got their seeds watered by experiencing their own policies firsthand and came to the realization that they are the baddies would suffice. The ones who sadly needed to get what they wished for before realizing how harmful it is will be the majority of your clients but maybe you can set up some 12 step program. It will likely be called a cult or criminal organization and raided so you may want to stay friendly with the people organizing around options one and two who can help you resist now that the fash are in power.
It takes a diversity of tactics is what im trying to say. We all need to resist them and invest resources in supporting their victims, and sure while picking up lost sheep along the way. We no longer have the luxury of waxing poetic at them while they kidnap kids who are citizens to lure their undocumented parents out of their homes.

They are responsible for a lot of suffering and the only chance they have at receiving basic respect from me personally is through acknowledging that.
Otherwise I do judge them for supporting fascism absolutely. I boycott their business. I refuse to associate with them in my personal life at all.
As my hometown is torn apart by ice today I loudly hope that the maga supporters feel the pain of their policies firsthand and I will not make excuses or apologies for that.
I dont know why you’re obsessed with the feelings of fascists and not with the harm they cause.
