Depends on the procedure. Orthopedic surgery in the USA is pretty fast to get. Getting an MRI approved when compared to, say Japan, takes forever.

48yo alpinist who climbs 5.12+ here. I’m constantly injured. If you’re not doing regular training for injury prevention it will come back to bite you in your 50’s or 60’s and you will not have the framework to navigate the injury without further fitness loss and a downward spiral of capabilities.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Besides money/capitalism, why are tech companies trying to push AI text generators over search engines?
8·6 months agoYour product might not benefit from AI but you definitely can get more VC investment dollars if you bolt an LLM onto the side of it and feature AI as central to what you’re offering. This is because VCs treat tech like fashion and don’t actually understand how it works or how it would integrate into our lives.
This was true for the nascent internet, and for blockchain even more, but truly nobody really understands how llms work so its way worse.

News@lemmy.world•Three climbers fell 400 feet to their death. One climber survived and drove to a pay phone
8·6 months agoHad they summited NEWS theres a bolted rappel. The old descent route went the way they were going down. Its possible they tried to rap off ancient webbing and pitons from before the bolts were installed.

24·6 months agoThey were rappelling in a snowy couloir on a winter scramble route. A piton pulled and the shock load ripped what meager protection they had for an anchor. Its possible they didn’t have rock pro at all.

15·1 year agoFormer twitter engineer here. Maybe he paid more attention at his other companies but Elon was comically clueless about how the twitter machine worked. Hiring geohot and thinking a firmware cracker could make heads or tails of a massively distributed system was pure idiocy.

93·1 year agoIts not OK and we need to nationalize healthcare now. But much of that above graph is also associated with the obesity epedemic and the nutritional collapse (or caloric inflation) of the western diet. Government definitely has a role in that, but its much trickier than obliterating the medical insurance industry (which of course is also tricky).
That’s been my survival mechanism. I’d be homeless otherwise but I was able to hyperfixate on work related things and become a workaholic after failing out of school (where I couldn’t focus on courses I didn’t like).
My life/work balance has never been good, but its awesome to be fixated on the thing people pay you money to do.

I was in the national forest (very near the fires here) on Labor Day and there were so many people with campfires shooting guns that the hills echoed in gunfire. Its like they feel entitled to do whatever they want because Trump is president.
