  • Yeesh, I thought you were being hyperbolic, but it really is that bad! He even has this massive self report towards the end:

And how do you avoid being punished? There are two ways. One that works; and one that doesn’t. The one that doesn’t work is to design everything up front before coding. The one that does avoid the punishment is to override all the safeties.

And so you will declare all your classes and all your functions open. You will never use exceptions. And you will get used to using lots and lots of ! characters to override the null checks and allow NPEs to rampage through your systems.

Uncle Bob must be the kind of guy who makes all of his types any when writing Typescript.

  • What I suspect is happening here is that it’s using a flexbox instead of a grid. I’m guessing it has a flex direction of row (horizontal left to right), uses flex wrap, and has each video thumbnail have a flex basis to keep them around the same size. It probably makes it easier to look good enough at most screen sizes without needing to have a bunch of media queries change the number of columns at different screen sizes, at the cost of things not always being perfectly aligned. Probably a good tradeoff compared to the alternative tbh.

  • I’ve finally gotten around to reading this article. It both cleared some things up and made me more confused. Like…

He touched his shirt, pointed at my water bottle — “In this capitalist system, everything, including relations between people, is inhuman. Only when we socialize the means of production, are human relations possible. Only then, can human reason guide society.”

It was then that I understood his materialist outlook as similar to that of an eschatologist (end-times fundamentalist).

Man’s salvation does not derive from man. It is imparted to man by an external force, (for him, a materialist reality apprehensible by sense-certainty).

This view depends upon at least two axioms.

    1. The universe is entropic (ruled by Satan).
    2. Man’s nature is inherently bad, but he can be saved through the struggle against Satan’s evil world (through the sacrificial violence of class conflict)

These axioms allow for what Malthusianism will not permit, viz. that man’s increases in productivity be acknowledged & be considered good.

It allows for the existence of Reason—as an eternally distant condition, which nevertheless may come at any time (the Rapture).

Statements dreamed by the utterly deranged.

  • I’ve been struggling with this shit too. I’m in a group chat with 3 trumpanzees, a Blue MAGA lib who thinks fascism is perfectly fine as long as the demonrats are doing it, and someone who subscribes to some vague lolbertarianism (all cishet crackermen, myself included). There was one who seems to be an actual leftist (I didn’t ask him about specifics), but he dipped from the chat a day or two ago when my friends were getting into an argument about the upcoming presidential election. I’m starting to think that was the right move.

If it weren’t for the fact that I had been close to these people for most of my life and they genuinely care about me, I am bad at meeting new people, and their lib/chudness is limited to garbage takes without acting on it, I’d have cut them out of my life a long time ago.
