I am curious: I have read the article and don’t believe his decision to be particularly bad and the reasons understandable.

While I agree that no one person should have too much power - Bill Gates at least tries to do some good with the money he accumulated. He is no angel, but there is a stark contrast to other billionaires who only use their money selfishly, try to earn even more, or - in Musk’s case - to behave like a cartoon supervillain.

So why is he often viewed so negatively? Am I missing something here?

I would argue humans often have a world model that is too coherent. If you ask a flat earther about their beliefs they will always argue that the earth is flat and evidence to the contrary is manufactured or interpreted wrongly. That is a completely absurd world model, but perfectly coherent.

Davon abgesehen würde ich zustimmen: Leute, die mit 250 auf der linken Spur rasen und versuchen diese mit Lichthupe freizuhalten, halten sich vermutlich für ganz besonders tolle Autofahrer, die auch bei einem Abstand von 30 cm noch immer rechtzeitig reagieren können…

Aber das ist das zweite Problem mit solchen Umfragen: Jeder hat eine andere Vorstellung davon, was ein “guter” Autofahrer ist.

Die CDU und FDP denken immer nur in Wachstum. Beim 1.5 Grad Ziel haben die gedacht: 1.5 Grad pro Jahrzehnt? Das bekommen wir hin.

Tolerance always has a limit. And the one thing any tolerant society can never tolerate are intolerant people - because they will destroy that society. Trump and his followers are the very definition of intolerant.

Thus the “if you are tolerant, you have to tolerate me” argument is often used by aforementioned nutbags or internet trolls, and I very much hope you fall into the latter category.

And regarding stupidity - sadly there is no mechanism to ensure that it is fairly distributed. A less than ideal public school system paired with the propaganda of media conglomerates can easily result in a society with half the population considered “dumb” (not really stupid, but brainwashed / uneducated with a lack of critical thinking and/or a lack of basic scientific knowledge …) - but I would not judge the US population that quickly. Trump is probably also a symptom of the broken US democracy.

I follow US news a little. You seem to be much further along on your way to abolish democracy. But to be fair, the “winner takes it all” voting mechanism and resulting two party system really helps in dividing a country.

Also “hoarding weapons” seems to be an acceptable pasttime in the US.

The ones arrested are not the far right you see on TV. They are conspiracy nuts who want to return to the time Germany had an emperor. They planned a revolution and hoarded weapons.
