Not an expert, just relaying what I read elsewhere. TLDR: “nothing goes in, nothing goes out between you two” is about right, but it’s not entirely symmetrical.

Instance A defederates from instance B. This means that (let instance C be a neutral third party that is federated with both A and B):

• no posts or comments by users from B anywhere on lemmy are visible to users from A
• existing posts and comments in communities on A are still visible to users from B
• new posts and comments by users from A and C in communities on A are not visible to users from B
• new comments by users from B to existing posts in communities on A are not visible to users from C
• new and existing posts and comments by users from A in communities on C are still visible to users from B

Yes, exactly. 0.0.35 only works with instances that are on lemmy 0.18.

I believe the reverse is also the case: 0.0.34 and below don’t work with instances that are on 0.18.

I also have not checked this, but I would not be surprised if other apps have trouble with 0.18 instances currently.

Well if you actually have free will, how can the machine predict your actions?

What if someone opened box B and showed you what was in it? What would that mean? What would you do?

I think the major unanswered question is how reliable do we think the machine is? 50%? 100%? I think the most interesting scenario is one where we are convinced that the machine actually predicts the future and always predicts correctly, so I’ll continue with that assumption in mind.

From one point of view, we have no reason not to take both boxes, since we can’t alter the machine’s prediction now, it’s already happened. I think however that this undermines my premise. Choosing both boxes only makes sense if we don’t actually believe the machine predicts the future.

One would be tempted to say "alright, then I will choose only box B, as the machine will have predicted that and I will get lots of money. If I were to choose both boxes, the machine would have predicted that too, and I would get much less money.

My argument is that both answers are wrong in a sneaky way: assuming an actual perfect predictor, my answer is box B only. However, the important part here is that this will not be, in fact, a choice. The result was already determined ahead of time, so I really only had that one option.

The latest version (0.0.35) is out already and has this feature. So far it’s only on github I think, but you could install it from that apk if you can’t wait for the play store release.

Some other things might be broken (default sort no longer seems to be remembered for instance) and you’ll have trouble connecting to instances that are not yet on lemmy 0.18 (this might be the majority currently; lemmy.ml is a big one that already updated), but apart from that, it’s looking good.

Beehaw “moderators” don’t have an issue with their user base checking out other communities. As is clearly obvious from the fact that they aren’t defederated from all other instances.

They do have an issue with droves of unvetted users from other instances trolling and harassing their community though. And the most effective way to deal with that currently is to defederate from the instances that the majority of those bad-faith users are coming from. The unfortunate (and unintentional) side effect is that Beehaw users won’t be able to interact with any of the users from those instances.

This is a situation born out of a combination of

• lack of manpower and moderation tools
• gaps in the configuration of inter-instance interactions
• the way the internet works

You can disagree with this decision and users are free to switch, but this meme is a poor caricature of the actual effects of Beehaw’s actions and (at least in my estimation) of their intentions.

The decision to defederate is less of an attack or an indictment against the other instances and more of a practical necessity for them to protect their community.

If the user base of the lemmy verse keeps growing I wouldn’t be surprised if either

• more granular control over the way instances interact with each other is implemented and the restrictions are softened or
• the amount of spammers and trolls reaches a level that forces more instances to vet their users and the defederation is lifted entirely or
• more powerful moderation tools show up and in combination with a greater number of people moderating makes the pre-screening of users unnecessary
