I second this. The villain robots having “genuine people personalities” was a huge win for this show.

The first season of Aldnoah.Zero plotted by Gen Urobochi is a fucking brilliant concept: Think Patlabors piloted by a genius vs high end Gundam fantasy mecha. The second season was meh though.
Speaking of Patlabors, the Patlabor Movie 1 and Patlabor Movie 2 both directed by the great Mamoru Oshii are really great.
It’s more like sentai tokusatsu robots (think the Mega Zords from Power Rangers) but SSSS.Gridman is a cool reboot of a vintage Tsuburaya (Ultraman) Productions live action show.
Along similar lines, Samurai Flamenco is another fun take on tokusatsu heroes, complete with a combining sentai robot, which admittedly only shows up towards the end of the only season.

3·2 days agoI think Akane is the only real choice to play Ai.
She’s the actress with the most talent, and can even put those white stars in her eyes on demand.
It’ll be a good excuse to get her into B-Komachi and fulfill the OP scenes.

The mercenaries should be very concerned after seeing Spriggan’s penchant of uncontrolled violence.
We haven’t even seen a copper changing hands yet.
What even makes them think they’ll get paid?
This show’s writing and pacing are just so off.
Just when you thought the plot was moving along, things get reset…
At least nobody’s mad at Isobe for cancelling last week’s fight.

8·4 days agoGenau does have a point.
The only reason that demons speak to humans is to get an advantage: To deceive, distract, whatever it takes to kill their prey.
It’s better to stay focused on battle, and not get distracted trying to have a fundamentally meaningless conversation.

Bay Area@lemmy.world•Grocery Outlet to close dozens of ‘underperforming’ storesEnglish
2·4 days agoIt’s true, that there are low odds of any of our local Bay Area GroceOuts closing, given tjat:
Grocery Dive, an industry publication, reported that 24 of the stores slated to close are on the East Coast, citing (Jason Potter, the company’s president and chief executive)’s remarks to investors.
and that:
But massive losses isn’t sustainable for business, unless you’re Amazon.
The company reported an increase in net sales, but an operating loss of $234.8 million and a net loss of $218.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2025.

2·4 days agoOff topic, but as you may or may not know, the largest/highest traffic lemmy instance, lemmynsfw went down about 2 weeks ago.
The two admins discuss what happened in this post:
https://ani.social/post/28177293
It’s been sort of recovered by one of the admins, but it only exists as an archive, or it will when that becomes available.
The surviving admin has created fedinsfw.app as a piefed instance because of much better moderation tools.
But content-wise, they’re starting from scratch.

2·4 days agoBrynhildr is an understated but devastating show that I really wanted more of.
It was never going to be massively popular.
The characters have powers, but they’re very limited.
It reminds me of those classic 70s and 80s British low budget sci fi survival horror shows: Survivors, Day Of The Triffids, etc. where the characters had to think or luck their way out of sticky situations.

1·4 days agoThis was interesting. It’s very anime-like art in Chinese animation.
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4P2Mr_Cwys
The dub is in Mandarin, of course because it’s from mainland China.
The stiff direction and editing has some rough edges, but the plot in the first episode wouldn’t be out of place in any isekai harem building show.
Some of the animation is appreciably skilled for those who appreciate such things: Panning shots around walking figures, for example.

But the selection of scenes where they put the effort in, felt odd.
Like why would you spend precious animation resources into a scene like the above?

1·4 days agoAs it happens so often, a racing driver knows he’s cooked when his tires smoke from a braking error.

But it really makes sense to set up your car for the part of the course with the trickiest turns.
Speed on straights is pretty much pre-determined by whatever platform you’re driving, and assuming all is otherwise equal, the most time to be lost is in cornering errors, or even slightly less-than-optimal cornering, on tight curves.

4·5 days agoGood episode, and I really enjoyed the end, but the trial aspect of Higurama’s Stand felt contrived.
It’s a good thing that the prosecution must share all evidence with the defense in a US trial.
I wonder if this episode reflects how Japanese trials work?

1·8 days agoThere was one folktale about rabbits and stumps https://www.eyeshenzhen.com/content/2024-05/30/content_30981180.htm.
The above reference is Chinese, but there is a lot of crossover in folklore from Chinese to Japanese culture.
So if you take the wily trickster symbolism of the rabbit, vs the hidebound traditionalism/conservatism/institutional symbolism of the stump which also may represent the organizers and customers of the death games.
An individual rabbit is absolutely no match for a stump in a head on collision, but the rabbits running into stumps is a rare occurrence.
Also, you probably read this, but for anyone else Kachi-kachi Yama is a folktale featuring a rabbit trickster.
If you can find the time, this show is an excellent binge watch.
I started watching with Season 3, and I found it easy to catch up on the first 2 seasons.

Try for the original Japanese 80s Macross TV show. It’s packed with young animating talent of now-classic directors.
The movie Macross: Do You Remember Love is a classic.
Macross Plus was a sequel OVA series that has some nice jet fighter dogfighting sakuga.
