Typically we think of otome games as visual novels. But I have played quite a few text-based games where you can play as a woman with a bunch of (male) love interests. Usually no or few images, definitely no CGs, but your choices affect the story and often characters’ opinions of you. Some are more focused on the relationships, some less. I was wondering how many people play otome who also play these interactive fiction games, or vice versa, how much the audience for both overlaps. Was also wondering if some IF might qualify as otome.

I’ve played those “Choice of” games before, but that was a few years ago 🤔
There is the !adventuregames@lemm.ee community though! It’s more of a general narrative game community, but IF is included
Well, lemm.ee went kersplat. Wondering if we and !visualnovels@ani.social should absorb it or not. @Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world
Thought about this because I came across https://www.filfre.net/2025/09/choose-your-own-adventure/ and it was a good read and wanted to post it somewhere here.
How active was the adventure games community? Is there anything to absorb of are we talking about “yeah, let them post once in a blue moon”?
Personally, I wouldn’t mind but with two stipulations:
Both of those points depend on my initial question though - how active was the original community?
If it was small and chill then the first requirement shouldn’t be too bad (this content won’t take over the VN front page, even if it’s not particularly active). If it had a decent amount of traffic on the other hand, making a new community shouldn’t take too long - serving as a temporary life-line for the folks looking for a new home is doable in this case.
It’s a tentative “yes” for me but mostly as a supportive measure rather than a permanent expansion. I’d prefer to keep the VN community within its niche.
Small and chill. I was only asking about IF, which was absorbed under !adventuregames (I think the two are separate genres?). I’ll respect your wishes and avoid posting pure IF there! Thank you for replying
Ah, my bad. I thought we were talking about both since Berin mentioned them combined together under single community before (I believe it had less with being the same genre and more with the number of members for either of them). But yeah, let’s just stick to stuff with at least a smidge of relevancy.
That said, if someone ends up creating a new community for these games feel free to drop me a tip - I’ll be more than happy to share it for visibility.
