An M.2 card might not seem like the best place for an LED matrix, but bitluni showed that it can turn a boring computer into a showpiece.

Why connect the it over PCIe when M.2 has SMBus? That would have been much easier since it could connect directly to the microcontroller and wouldn’t require routing any high speed signals.
