Excepting a few blocks in a neighbourhood that are traffic calmed (30k/hr limit with speed bumps), all of it is either entirely separate, or protected with bolted down concrete abutments.

My city (Canberra, Australia) has had bike paths between the (car based) suburbs and the city centres
That go through parkland. My favourite from my suburb to work follows a river valley, while the road is hundreds of metres away and on the other side of a hill
But they were built in the 1970s, and tree roots have corrugated the paths in places. It’s good to have suspension and low tyre pressure on the paths
