Even if you compare the amount of civilians that have died in the U.S. War in Afghanistan, you see that much more civilians were killed in the Soviet war than the American war. What is the cause of this?
The casualties were widely exaggerated by the mujahideen to use as propaganda. The USSR actually killed far fewer civilians than the US. The Triumph of Evil starting at page 65 has a good explanation.
Soviet afghan war was a proxy war by US and china to bleed USSR to it’s death. Firstly it was PDPA government who invited USSR to oust the mujhadeens from the country side. There are 2 things, USSR misunderstood the religious sentiments of Orthodox afghans and also were ignorant about China’s role in training the Uyghurs to do jihad. Civilians were killed on both sides of the war.
