I think the fact that it’s just a little bit surreal is also important. If you remember back in the early days of generative art the images that everyone were initially captivated by were all HR Gieger-esque horrors, which were improved by being close to realistic looking but not quite there yet.
edit: this was also a big draw in the early AI Dungeon era, the fact that the game would make absolutely wild connections and go on unexpected tangents and suddenly introduce sexy vampires into every story.
exactly, the AIs that are available now are much more advanced and sophisticated, but they’re also worse than they’ve ever been, due to the fact that they’re really fucking boring
