I remember on Reddit that the various gonewild communities have verification processes to ensure everyone posting content is over the age of 18. I’m not entirely sure how the communities here work, but I figured some of the mods for those spaces here probably lurk asklemmynsfw; hence posting the question here!

(sorry if that made no sense! I’m not great at wording things lol)

Very good question that needs to be answered. With the growth of these communities, CSEM, revenge porn, rape, etc. are going to be posted more and more commonly. What are the moderators doing to prevent this?

Also, legally speaking, anyone running a Lemmy instance with these things on it could be charged. Laws like this are why big sites have a lot of moderation or often choose to get rid of NSFW stuff entirely.

IANAL: can you be charged for holding a hyperlink to a server that hosts but not host the image yourself? I ask because images are not copied as part of federated data. They remain on the original instance.

I also ANAL but I’m pretty sure ThePirateBay tried the “we don’t host the material ourselves” argument and it didn’t work out well for them. In any case, even if you’re not in the wrong, having to prove that to a judge in a court is more time consuming and expensive than shutting down the server.

Technically they are. As far as I’m aware its temporary, but they are copied & cached for some time. I think it was a week by default.
