We’ve been waiting for an Xbox release date for Hypercharge: Unboxed for what feels like an eternity at this point, and after a cheeky teaser last month, the dev team has finally delivered. This bright and colourful toy-soldier shooter is coming to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S on May 31st.

Yep, after two years of work to get the Xbox release going, Digital Cybercherries is now locked and loaded with its late May release date. Here’s how the team describes its popular shooter, which has been out on PC and Nintendo Switch for quite some time:

“Inspired by films like Toy Story and Small Soldiers, Hypercharge: Unboxed is the first and third-person shooter action figure game you’ve always dreamed of! Grab your friends, complete objectives, defend the Hypercore against waves of weaponized toys and defeat Major Evil together in the story campaign. Hypercharge welcomes both parents and children into a vibrant world of action figures and toys.”

Hypercharge: Unboxed features “a full story campaign mode” and “an array of PvP modes” for Xbox users to enjoy, in either solo play or up to four player co-op. You can also play this shooter in both first and third-person, with local split-screen support a welcome feature too.

Anyway, we’re finally in Xbox Hypercharge month, with just a few weeks to go until the full release date. If you’re thinking about picking the game up for launch, the team is currently running a 10% pre-order discount throughout May.

The stages in this game are pure nostalgia. It’s so fun to explore the nooks and crannies of every stage, and look for secrets! With that being said, wave/tower defense is a huge waste for a main game type. You’re limited to how many deployables you can select to have available, only 3 at a time. Then you get coins from killing enemies, and spend the coins trying to keep your defenses up to protect the hypercores. Getting overwhelmed is pretty easy, and having your defense crumble, and not have enough money to fix them up is also common. Also, selecting 3 deployables to have available can hamstring you due to selecting say, a spike trap, defense walls, and a ground turret would leave you at a disadvantage if there are air enemies and you didn’t select the Anti-Air deployable.

Over the last year or two they finally added a free-roam so you can at least enjoy exploring the lovingly crafted stages. I think they just missed an opportunity to make something more akin to Toy Commander for Dreamcast, rather then a wave based tower defense game.

I have no complaints about this game. Everytime I play it something puts a smile on my face. The details in every element are wonderful - the environments are gorgeous and interactive, the action figures are beautifully textured and animated, and the enemies are diverse in both appearance and behavior. The guns, tower defense tools, and platforming are all fun too. I really hope this Xbox release gives it a big playerbase boost. The devs have put so much love into it.
