    I wonder how much if it is companies posting “jobs” due to visa requirements for someone who is already working there. PERM requires job postings, I believe there are some similar requirements for H1B as well.

      There are definitely structural reasons for companies to post job openings without any intention of hiring based on those postings. Even just wanting leverage in negotiations with potential inside hires would be enough. Job postings have become at least partially decoupled from the actual demand for jobs.

      I’d assumed it was to pad out statistics to signal growth to investors. So these jobs are part of a sales pitch that could be real in the event that an investor bites. These are the jobs we would post if we had the budget.
