Sure, don’t record people in public, but I don’t think it makes any difference in public transport ridership. Most people just pick whatever gets them to their destination quickest (and affordable). The problem is that in many cases this is the car.
Convenience and speed are probably the primary factors that impact people’s decisions but I don’t think you can discount secondary factors like safety and comfort.
