    but in the US simply expressing support for an organization on some official terrorist list isn’t a crime.

    It is in some ways and formats. The podcast 5-4 had a very good episode on this as even offering any level of legitimate/legitimizing support could very easily be interpreted by the courts to be a criminal action.
