For this Wednesday Slop Night, we’re starting with The Hills Have Eyes (1977), one of the most famous 70s slop movies. This was due to be shown awhile ago, but never was, so I guess we’ll finally do it tonight. Anyway, from director Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street [1984], Scream [1996]) comes the classic tale of a bougie family whose car breaks down in the middle of the sticks. Things from bad to worse when they’re attacked by a band of deranged mutant cannibals. A whole lot of screaming ensues as the family attempts to fight back. Could this be trying to say something about our society? I guess we’ll find out. This was a staple on the grindhouse circuit back in the day, and still packs a punch now.
After that is Dazed and Confused (1993), another long-standing request that we will finally fulfill. It is a stoner comedy from Richard Linklater (Slacker [1990], Waking Life [2001], Boyhood [2014]) about a group of graduating high-school seniors in 1976 who decide to throw a wild party at the end of the year. Hilarity ensues as they wander around and get into various mischief. This is one of the classics of the “dudes hang out” genre, and is generally considered one of Linklater’s best.
Last is Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns (2000), one last bonus Pokemon feature for those who are still awake by then. The movies may be over, but several people still wanted to watch this hour-long special, which is a direct sequel to Pokemon: The First Movie (1998).
We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:
