Valérie Plante will not be seeking re-election as Montreal’s mayor, according to Radio-Canada sources.

Plante is expected to hold a news conference at 11:30 a.m. to announce the decision.

Plante has served two terms as mayor of Montreal. She was first elected in 2017 after defeating incumbent Denis Coderre. She was re-elected in 2021.

She had previously said she would seek another mandate.

Sad to see, I feel like she did a lot of good such with walkability and cycling infrastructure. We can only hope someone similar comes along.

In September, Plante closed comments on her social media posts, saying her replies had been dominated by abusive language for months.

I wonder if this has something to do with her stepping down.

It makes me scared for the future of Montreal. If pro-urban mayors can simply get bullied into stepping down, will anyone want to fill that role or will Montreal slowly revert back to car centricity under conservative leadership?

I’ll continue to fight drivers on the road with my life, I deserve space to bike without being harassed. Helmet cams help a LOT.

Yeah I agree. I have this fear at all levels of politics as things continue to get more and more toxic.
