Interesting article. I’ve had similar trouble with art on rpg books. I’ve always wanted to make a monster manual but understood I couldn’t afford the artwork. I started making the Brick Monsters for that exact purpose. Granted this effectively makes me the artist and unless it gets enough sales, I’m still not getting paid.
I have also started making my own artwork (drawings instead of Lego builds) for this purpose. Based on the artwork for the module the blog writer, I suspect he is better than I am.
