For me it feels like breaking up with someone after many years. At the same time, I feel a bit dirty mentioning the name in the post title.

what does it mean for people signed up on that instance?

will there be an headless profile floating around the fediverse or does it simply being deleted when the instance deletes?

I think the latter based on the comments I’ve read… But I’m far from knowledgeable about it.

Good question. I’m assuming everything would be lost if you existed on just one instance, but I don’t really know, and I was making some assumptions of migration (pre shutting an instance down) based on Mastodon. I’m reading up on it now and it seems like there’s a lot more implications for the idea than on Mastodon.

Apparently you can synchronize your account between instances: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2931 I’m not sure if this is how this works, but it would be great if you could have one “account” have many heads all synchronized in case any particular instance goes down.

There is an open discussion right now about allowing users and communities to be migrated between instances. I’d imagine it will be a real feature soon enough.
