Submit Nominations Here
Hey everybody! A couple days ago, @Nineswords@ani.social reached out to me with an idea. Why don’t we try to set up some year-end awards for the communities we moderate? Well, a bit of back and forth, and today, I am glad to announce that we have opened nominations for the 2024 Lemmy Manga Awards. The nomination round will remain open until I post next week’s general discussion thread (usually late Sunday/early Monday US time). Note that there are partner awards for the anime and light novel communities as well.
Like normal, feel free to also use this thread just like you would a normal discussion thread.
Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).
Hey all! Welcome to my meta comment about the year-end awards. I am going to try to pre-emptively answer some questions you may have:
Are the awards just for manga?
No! There are three different awards: anime, manga, and light novels. Check out each one here:
What counts as manga? Is X series eligible?
Any series that published in 2024 is fair game. This includes series that started long ago but have continued into this past year (One Piece, etc.) or even ended this past year (Nagatoro, Oshi no Ko, etc.).
Series that are eligible would be anything that is within the rules for this community. That means that manhwa are also eligible for example.
Who chose these categories and why is my favorite category missing?
Well, like I wrote up top, this all came together pretty quick. So, I did my best to come up with a good sprinkling of categories that covers a broad range, but not so many categories that it is annoying to actually submit votes for all those things.
Please let me know if you don’t like some stuff or want changes. It’s kind of too late for this year, but rest assured that I will incorporate feedback for the future.
What is this survey site? It looks super sketchy...
I am hosting it! It is a dockerized instance of LimeSurvey (thanks martialblog for creating a docker image). I initially ran into problems hosting this on my VPS that I use for things (like rikka), because this service takes a ton of memory. So, this is now running on my homeserver, literally in my office, right next to my desk.
Here is a fun little peek into how figuring out setting up the site went:
As for privacy/security, I have all the surveys configured to not record IP numbers or other identifying information. I know you can only take my word for it, but I hope that I have earned at least a little trust at this point running this community.
One thing to note for the voting round is that the survey will place a cookie into the browser to try to prevent voting multiple times (feel free to do multiple rounds of nomination). Frankly, this is the flimsiest of defenses because private browsing easily circumvents it, but that is the extent to which this site should mess with your browser.
Nominations...but what about the voting?
Voting comes next! The nomination window will be open for one week (week 50). Then, week 51, the nomination submissions will be sorted through by NineSwords and I for our respective communities. Then, the voting period will be over the course of week 52, the final week of the year. Winners, should everything go as planned, will be announced on the 31st of December.
For nerds that care a lot about voting methodologies...
I am right there with you. For the voting round of these awards, in each category, you will be able to rank-order the nominees in the order you want. Then, at the close of the voting, a ranked-choice election will take place. I haven’t written the code yet, but I plan on using PyRankVote to run the election using the Instant Runoff Vote (IRV) method since it is just single winner elections.
The other option in consideration right now is STAR voting. Basically, you would be able to assign each nominee a score from 0-5 where 5 means it is most deserving of winning (non-exclusive, meaning you can give multiple nominees a score of 5). Then, I would use the starvote python package to process the data and determine the winner.
Awards!?! What are we, Buzzfeed? Reddit? I hate this!
First, chill…but I get it. I thought this would be a fun community thing, but if the community hates it, then we won’t do it again. Simple as that. Do please let me know. I hope that I have proven by this point a willingness to incorporate community feedback, even when it is critical.
Personally filled this out based on how strong I felt the chapters released in 2024 itself were (eg. manga I like a lot in general, but didn’t release the same level of content in 2024 I didn’t nominate). There’s a lot of manga in general so this contest might be a bit more difficult to gauge than the anime one but looking forward to see what gets recommended by the polls.
based on how strong I felt the chapters released in 2024 itself were
That is how I am doing it too. I also expect that the anime awards are going to be simpler for people to judge than either these or the light novel awards due to the difference in volume of material as well as the seasonal structure of anime making it easier to keep up with in general.
When we’re talking published in 2024, do we mean the translation or the original publish date?
Good question. I am going to say the original publish date (either in Japanese or in English). So, if a volume was published a couple years ago, but was only posted to Mangadex recently, it would not be eligible. If, however, that same title was licensed and had an official English translation come out this year, then it would be eligible again. There can sometimes be years between the different publish dates, and different people access them differently, so I don’t want to prevent people that only read officially licensed translations feel like they can’t nominate anything or read any of the nominees. Also, I am limiting it to English for my own sake of trying to confirm things on my end when finalizing the nominees.
Cool, thanks
I’ll just drop this here in case anyone reads, and is may be interested in what’s going on with my bursts of activity and subsequent disappearances.
Couple of coworkers decided to bail for other jobs, and the (already insane) workload I have has been tripled. In the country where I live and work the work week is 37.5 hours long. This week, and Friday hasn’t even passed, I am already at 80 hours and counting.
When I get home I basically say hi to my family, have something to eat, shower, and collapse in bed.I haven’t had the time to read anything, and it will probably be like this at least for the next couple of months minimum. Luckily for me, I have two weeks of vacation coming, so I hope I can get up to speed with my backlog and relax a bit.
Sounds like a reasonable business, yes sir. I hope the money makes for it, if only a little bit, because this should be freaking illegal. Good luck and stay sane!
Overworked? Fatigued? Stressed out? We’ve got a team put together to help you out with that…
Good luck with everything!
Are we only allowed to nominate manga that are first released in 2024? Or any manga that are ongoing in 2024? Or any manga?
Also, what is considered manga? Only Japanese comics?
Anything that published in 2024 is fair game. So, something that started prior to 2024 but continued into this year is eligible. This includes series that might have ended in 2024 (Nagatoro, Oshi no Ko, etc.).
Also, anything that is appropriate for this community is eligible. That means stuff like manhwa is fine.
Going to add these to my FAQ post.
It was a good week for me when it came to manga, with lots of chapter releases for the following:
All three of these have been great. I decided to check out IseGure this week and it is so unhinged, but in a really fun way.
Fun idea. Choosing the nominees was tough.
Maybe an idea for next time, if that happens: I don’t know how you’ll collect the nominations, but maybe it’s a good idea to request AL/MAL links instead of just the title? Feels more foolproof, but I could be wrong.
Yeah, I’ll see how burdensome sorting through all the nominees proves to be. I wanted to make it as easy as possible to try to help get more responses. If I end up in a situation where it’s taking too much time to handle, then I might do that next year.
Alright, I managed to dig into my backlog from vacation quite a bit. I even found some new series that I checked out this week. Two in particular I really enjoyed:
I really enjoyed this one. It is a romcom where one person is desperate to find true love only to see her efforts spurned. Meanwhile, the other person is jaded and cynical about love, but respects her efforts to seek it out. Only three chapters on Mangadex so far (with 30 chapters total in the series), but I am eagerly awaiting more.
I just spent most of my free time this past weekend blasting through this series. It is quite a strange setup, but I found it quite fun. Basically, two girls both like the same guy in their class, but, despite how much they obsess over him (the titular Kirio), they never seem to work up the courage to do much of anything about it. In fact, Kirio’s face doesn’t appear in the series at all and he is mostly a side/background character a lot of the time. Instead, the series mostly focuses on these two girls and their silly antics.
These girls are weird, like really weird, but hilarious at the same time. If you are looking for a pair to compare them to, I would say they are like a more awkward version of the girls from The Gals Who Always Say Insane Things minus the superpowers. Their dynamic is so much fun.
My shōjo-ness is infecting others. Good. 😁
Kadath right now…
Who took a picture of me right after I woken up?! 😱
Having submitted most of my nominations, I can see that 90% of my favourite manga are comedies, of which half are parodies.
I’m curious to see if my prediction for anime translates to manga as well i.e. Frieren, Apothecary Diaries and Dan Da Dan getting the lion’s share of the awards.
I’d say that there’s a good chance for Frieren seeing as we have discussion threads for Frieren here, but not so much for the other two.
I only read one manga released this year, and I didn’t check the FAQ. I guess you will know which one is my submission—you would be MAD if you didn’t.
Dandadan is definitely my nominee. I haven’t been as excited about a manga in years.
In non-awards news, I just saw this: Squid Girl’s Masahiro Anbe to Launch New Manga Series
I am pretty pumped. I loved Mystery Research Club and am slowly working my way through Squid Girl (love it as well). So, I am down for whatever Anbe wants to do next.
