The billionaire Frank McCourt is launching a “people’s bid” to buy the app, replace its addictive algorithm, and give users greater control of their data. Is it a publicity stunt or a sincere attempt to reform the digital age?

    Define: whole Internet.

Otherwise it is hard to answer that question. Yes, it’s just a headline, but still…

It would be great to go back to the decentralised roots of the internet. Way too many services are centralised nowadays and that’s just a catastrophe waiting to happen.

The more interesting link thank a paywalled article is to the actual Project Liberty programme to try and buy tiktok: https://www.projectliberty.io/peoples-bid-for-tiktok/

I don’t know enough about this group andnplannto know whether the ownership structure would work and be independent. But the broad idea of collective ownership instead of a shareholder mentaloty oght bebgood for many companies. Too many are entirely focused on anything that will boost the share price rather than what is best for the company and customers.

No. Unless we strip billionaires of their empires, and I don’t think the NYT New Yorker would advocate that.

New Yorker, not the New York Times.

Oh, whoops. Thanks! The substance of my comment is unchanged, however.

This is the New Yorker, not the NYT. I don’t know them all that well though, so it might mean nothing.
