I’ve noticed that when browsing through threads, some users have the @ prefix, while others don’t, despite both being members of this instance.

What’s the reason for that? Is it something to do with the “Display name” option in the settings?

    Yes. If you set a display name, it displays without the “@”. If you leave the display name blank, it displays the username with the “@”.

      Also, when it comes to pinging other users, will the “@” work for both their display name and username or do you need to know their username for that?

        That I do not know for sure. But you can get the username by hovering over their display name.

          Ah, okay. I think I didn’t realize that because on mobile it just shows the display name and hovering isn’t an option. (Though, long press will show the username, at least on my browser, because it shows the direct link to the user’s profile.)

          Might be different in apps, though, depending on how they interpret that data. I’ll check that later, but not super important.

          Anyway, answers much appreciated!
