I remember the first time I saw this.

Devon Island is an island in Canada that looks a lot like the surface of Mars. So what they’ve done here is take pictures of Devon Island and put a red filter over them. All the images that you see are actually from earth.

This made me wonder if it was just a prank image and then it was picked up by conspiracy theorists as a real thing.

That doesnt seem to be all it is. I still dont doubt this is fake but the photos can be found on nasas website. https://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA00568

Edit: at least the first one thats labelled. Im not gonna go looking for the rest because those probably are just pictures of earth with a red filter. But for the first one it looks like they went the other way and filtered the picture of mars to look like earth.
