Haaning told Danish radio at the time: “The work is that I have taken their money. It’s not theft. It is breach of contract, and breach of contract is part of the work.”
Flawless. No notes.
Honestly, if he titled the works Breach of Contract, I say he wins. Seems valid enough in a Banksyesque way.
Well, he called it “Take the Money and Run” which is IMO even better.
Bullshit! Derivative!
Well they’re bone honest if nothing else.
No bank notes
FTFY
(Yes, I’m completing my own joke, what’s it to ya? None of yall capitalized on the setup, so now it’s my sacred duty and I’m not gonna sully it by sock-puppeting or editing my original post.)
At the time, Lasse Andersson, the director of the Kunsten Museum, told the Guardian: “We are not a wealthy museum. … We have to think carefully about how we spend our funds, and we don’t spend more than we can afford.”
Well done. Fight the system by committing fraud against a museum. So brave.
Well it’s only fair, he essentially handed in an empty paper. You get an F for that in school, too. Plus he very openly mocked them about it, too.
Okay, this is…. Funny, but it sounds like some of the money was meant to be used in the artwork (the commission was to recreate prior work that used money to represent incomes of people,)
So, funny, but, uh…. Morally dubious at best
The exhibition was meant to feature actual cash money, and the loan he is refusing to return was intended to be for that purpose.
It’s not even payment that he’s holding on to.
I am a little surprised the court didn’t tell him to give back the artist’s fee too. 3,600 dollars to do nothing and fuck off without doing the work that he was paid to do.

This has sovereign citizen energy
Oh I never thought of that. I’m super in to sovereign citizens. I joined a bunch of their Facebook groups for fun. They’re bonkers like this guy.
The artists have found a good way to lose support for arts funding
Well, at least he’s a man of principles:
I encourage other people who have working conditions as miserable as mine to do the same. If they’re sitting in some shitty job and not getting paid, and are actually being asked to pay money to go to work, then grab what you can and beat it.
I feel the spirit of this strongly but it’s a dick thing to do to an arts organization reliant on donors and government funds.
It ain’t AI, so he should copyright the art.
