Another week in the books. Let’s chat about manga in the general discussion thread! Feel free to use this thread for questions, comments, recommendations, etc.

Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).

I haven’t had too much time to read this past week, but there are a couple things I wanted to call out:

This series finished up with chapter 37 not too long ago, so I went ahead and binged the series. Overall, it started of a bit sus…but it finished up quite nicely. The sensei gets a nice backstory and the girls all slowly grow up in their own ways. It wasn’t great, but it was pretty good, especially with a bit of a rough start.

This is another series that finished up recently, so I decided to knock it out. I can’t really recommend it though. The story was a bit all over the place and the gags never really connected with me.

A big thing happened in this series in recent chapters and I am a big fan. I am all ready for the undiluted sugar that is on the horizon in this series. I recommend this series as one that is basically a zero-drama romance full of just unadulterated fluff.

I just caught up on a batch of chapters for this series and I am really happy with it. This series does a great job of balancing answering questions that the story presented before while also introducing new mysteries. Each time I dive back into this series, it just makes me wish that we had a season 2 announcement.

Well, I finally took some time to catch up on various series. Most of them were or still are posted here (both by me and others) but there’s also one I haven’t really mention here before. No links this time since most of the titles aren’t available on Mangadex anymore and I’m not exactly in the know on which sites are trustworthy enough to post here.

    Anyway, here’s the list:

    • A Story About Smoking At The Back Of The Supermarket
Things seem to be moving towards the big reveal which I’m both waiting for and dread (just in case it’ll lead to an end). Either way, I still love this one - more with every chapter in fact.
    • Fool Night
I think I finally got used to the expanded world/cast and direction of the story. I wasn’t really sold on this before and I still have some doubts whether it’ll stay interesting or ends up jumping the shark but so far I see no reason to stop reading. I do think the spy-thriller it’s doing now is a bit less interesting for me however it’s not a huge deal as of yet.
    • Kowloon Generic Romance
I was a few chapters behind with this one but the anime adaptation finally gave me the push to catch up (not that I needed convincing, just kept forgetting due to other thing happening around me). We’re slowly getting more and more into the mystery here which I can’t wait for, at the same time however I’m a bit sad the anime is the way it is as anime-only people lose on many fun character moments. Oh well, at least it got a decent adaptation in the first place unlike some stories…
    • War’s Unwomanly Face
This is a great read for anyone interested in war (specifically WWII) beyond the usual drama and heroics. It approaches these somewhat overplayed topics from a more humane and emotional perspective than usual, to the point it’s one of my favourite pieces of media about this period. Granted, I’m not extremely well versed in the historical literature on this topic nor is it the only story to talk about it this way but still.
    • The Saga of Tanya the Evil
contrary to the title above, this one is just a pure action and power fantasy. I might love the humane and emotional approach but the adventures of the child war criminal are too entertaining to stop reading.
    • Beware the Villainess!
I haven’t posted about this one before as I had a long break from the series after Mangadex entries skipped a dozen or so chapters which prevented me from catching up. Well, I finally did and it was just as fun as I remember it being.
For those wondering, this is a pretty basic premise story - college student gets isekai’d into the role of a villainess of a romance novel she used to read. Using her knowledge of the plot (and being way more headstrong and stubborn than the original) she turns the story on its head in some unexpected and fun ways. The charm comes out in the execution.
It has fantastic humour, a lot of great reaction faces and plays with art style so often it keeps the whole thing from feeling stale (even though it uses the “generic manhwa visuals” for the most part).
Finally there are the outfits. Man, I love all the clothes used in the story but I have to give a special mention to MC’s wardrobe - she has SO MANY beautiful outfits it’s simply a joy to watch. Heck, I love MC’s design in general but that’s another matter. All in all, each chapter is a feast for my eyes.
I’m not the most experienced web toon reader so I’m sure there are better series out there but this one has been a pretty great read for me. It also made me want to go back to another manhwa I haven’t touched in years so I might do just that in the near future (I feel like I could use a change of pace from manga for a bit).

Man, after a few dry weeks I finally got to do some proper reading. It’s nice to be back. Sorry for the wall of text though - I wasn’t really sure how to format things this time nor had the time to play around with it. I might tidy up later, when I have some time.

I keep hearing this over and over. I’m 3 episodes into the anime and I might just drop it and pick up the manga instead.

Just to clarify, I’m not saying the anime is bad - it does as much as it can with the limited time it has (12 episodes planned if I recall correctly). It’s just that there are 11 volumes (or 95 chapters) of the source materials and the story isn’t even finished there. There’s just no way to fit everything into the show.
What it does show is done pretty well and that’s what I was the most worried about before it started.

If you want to read the manga then by all means do so - it’s great and the missing content does flesh out the characters and world a decent amount. If you do like the show however and are just worried about missing context or important info then I think you should be fine sticking with the anime (maybe jumping into manga afterwards if you feel thirsty for more).

Neither is a bad choice based on what I’ve watched so far.

Even if the anime isn’t bad it sounds like the manga is an even better experience so I figured I might as well give that a go instead. This is /c/manga after all. I don’t post about it much because lately I’ve been reading mostly in Japanese and therefore slowly but I spend time reading manga nearly every day because I really enjoy it. It’s not just something I settle for when the anime isn’t very good or isn’t finished or something.

Ah, good to know. I wanted to give some additional context just in case. Manga is indeed a better experience in my opinion so I hope you have fun with that one.
