Private Travis King, the US soldier who ran into North Korea in July, is expected to return to the US in the coming hours after he was expelled by North Korea into China
King, 23, made a sudden dash into North Korea while on a civilian tour of their heavily fortified border and was immediately taken into North Korean custody.
While details about the diplomacy that led to King's transfer remained scarce, the development was a rare example of cooperation between the US, North Korea and China.
In his hometown of Racine, Wisconsin, a neighbor looked forward to King's return.
His release followed months of intense diplomacy, the US officials said, adding that no concessions were made to the North in exchange for King.

His story is that he wanted to defect because of racism in his unit, and the official story is that he was jailed in South Korea for assault and is facing military charges for it.
To be perfectly honest I don’t see any reason to believe the former unless the latter is thoroughly debunked, as we all know that harrassing (or worse) the locals is a favorite hobby of US troops stationed on foreign bases.
