The top layers are just straw so they come right off. Afterwards I dug in with my (gloved hands) to feel for them. When I was done finding them, I turned the bed over (just the soil, not the whole bed) with a pitchfork and found a few ones I missed. I don’t start with the pitchfork because it can damage them.
