A week later, I decided to abandon the property purchase and stay away from the entire area. I’m not sure how easy it could have been to fake raw photos 20 years ago, but the things i found on that phone, combined with the number of estates in the area settled under a “presumption of death” for the disappear of their owners was enough to convince me not to waste any more time there.
I saw something like this once, kind of hovering between two trees. Also in an area where a lot of folks had abandoned, in rural Ohio. Not sure if it was the same exact thing, but it was enough to make me go weak in the knees and never go into those woods again. You’re right to forget that property location.

Good decision. The subterraneans aren’t outright malicious, but they’re less… inhibited than you or I. Better leave them to their own devices.
