I do find it a bit odd that Stalin persecuted the gay Mafia in Russia. One would think that he’d of been fine with it as long as they weren’t actively or being seen to undeone him or the USSR.
Christians have a (shitty) reason for doing it. They see it as part of their religion (while ignoring everything else the religion says like God saying he’ll judge people, not people judge people) but what reason did strain have? Y’know?
It was a very convenient accusation that preyed on pre-existing prejudices in society, allowing Stalin to marginalize and eliminate potential rivals by accusing them of ‘bourgeois degeneracy’.
Dictators rarely have a “Live and let live” attitude. They seek to reinforce prejudices that do not threaten them as a means of redirecting anger and dissatisfaction at weakened minorities instead of the authoritarian regime.
Russia has a long cultural history of glorifying the patriarchal strong-man leader, and all of their leaders, regardless of ideology, have exploited it to some degree.
Wait, sorry can you expand on the “gay mafia?” Was there an organized group of The Gays or was it more like some leaders being outed and having that used against them? Or something completely different lol
It’s almost like we shouldn’t be aligning our entire personalities with political parties/movements and use logic and compassion to make choices and decisions as they present themselves.
No arguments here, Stalin was a horrific person towards both of those communities so praising him while being a part of the communities is jfc levels of what even are you doing.
My brain had decided to just bring up the other point for some reason, not certain why. It does that from time to time.
Well I’ll add some more words if you need them. Really more words are more ballast to me. Israel for all its faults has not really been anti-semitic in its history and has been very progressive regarding lgbt rights even when compared to western europe or scandinavia
Do more words make it easier for you to understand the sentiment or that it is a meaningful answer to the post I replied to?
Less progressive than the most progressive European countries, but more progressive than the least progressive European countries. All in all a close second ;)
Tankies gonna tank. But also it’s kinda hard to find a culture that hasn’t at some point been antisemitic anti lgtbq+ and/or antitrans.
It is, however, fairly easy not to praise people who were instrumental in worsening antisemitism or anti-LGBTQ sentiment in their era and nation.
Truer words have never been said.

Alphabet Mafia, casual term for the LGBTQ community
Gay Mafia is my preferred term for referring to the LGBTQ+ community. It rolls off the tongue quicker and sounds cooler.

Preach friend!
It is, yeah. But Stalin regularly gulag’d queers and jews throughout his reign.

Israel
Ok I’ll see myself out
Please do. You added a single word and no constructive or meaningful discussion.

Israel hasn’t been more progressive compared to Europe.
Less progressive than the most progressive European countries, but more progressive than the least progressive European countries. All in all a close second ;)
You could be less of an ass about it but you’re correct. With the additional context I can understand the point you’re making it.
Fair enough, sorry for acting like an ass before
Happens to all of us. I’m kinda curious how unique Israel is in terms of gay and trans policy.
For example if another very new country we’re created would they also follow in Israel’s steps?
You mean like South-Sudan?
