    So if one does not want to give id documents out for id theft the alternative is to live off the grid? So much for eu digital development.

    I’ve read something about the eIDAS program. It just mandates that the digital ID be optional for some amount of time (I don’t know how long until they mandate it for everyone). While EU countries are required to do this, they can’t mandate said digital ID for citizens yet, from what I’ve read. I could be wrong on that, though.
