IIRC these are choir books. You put them in front of the choir gor everyone to see. It was cheaper than having a small book for everyone.

This is just the folio size section of any research library holding old books. There is nothing specifically Czech about that picture, it could have been taken in any research library in the world.
Maybe someone should admit he needs better glasses before printing books at 300% zoom?
