I got sick of AI crawlers not taking the hint so I setup a tarpit (Nepenthes) to feed them endless slop. For the corpus text it generates from, I gave it the transcripts for “The Thaw”, “Bride of Chaotica”, and a sprinkling of Jack Handey quotes.

“There’s only 3 meals a day: Coffee, black” was one of the random permutations when I was doing some checks on the output, so that’s what the meme is based on.

Semi permalink to that specific output: https://content.dubvee.org/lodestone/constructively/inexpiable/firebox/villainies (It’ll reset the next time I change the settings or update the corpus text). Note that it intentionally loads slowly if you opt to view the slop link.

Lol, oh yes. The AI’s get the best plotlines:

The confinement rings. Lonzak presses a button on his belt, and Janeway is a crying baby in a state of artificial hibernation, programmed to end four years ago. It’s literally an escape hatch.

I mean, you’re free to click through the slop generator lol. It’s open to the public. Each link at the bottom leads to a new random output based on the transcripts from those two episodes and some Jack Handey quotes to spice it up.

I’ll admit, some of them are quite funny.

Thanks but no. I’ll keep my brain non-sloppified for today. I don’t need fewer iq points.

I self-host a lot of things, but few are really public and hardly any of them see any traffic at all. So far I’ve avoided that mess, but I should look into that honeypot-ish thing. Sounds like an excellent idea.

I’ve got a few public-facing things in addition to this lemmy instance and have been content until now just returning 404 to any bot user agent. You’d think they’d take the hint that nothing’s here for them but no. Had some free time yesterday so finally setup Nepenthes. Seems pretty lightweight so far (not as lightweight as a 404 response but where’s the fun in that?) and I’ve got the bandwidth to spare, so what the heck?

It feels like the digital equivalent of filling Amazon boxes with dog poo and leaving them out for porch pirates.

It’s a glorious idea. I host on very lightweight hardware (on purpose, kind of as a game) and have plenty of bandwidth. Might be a fun thing to try. Thanks for the tip!
