Talking about Cthulhu being asleep/waking assumes that he/it/they has something comparable to human neurology, which is a very big if. Do we even know that Cthulhu would have a stream of consciousness or a sense of self? It may be more like a swarm of autonomous entities, loosely coordinated, some of which probe at the minds of the sensitive even as the majority are inactive.
He must have a stream of consciousness somewhat similar to our own, but yet it is different, considering he brings sleeping humans into his dreams sometimes.
Is he though? Maybe it’s like the non Euclidean geometry, sleeping for ole hentai face is like wakefulness for us
I believe the exact phrasing is that he is “dead but dreaming.” So it is a little like you say.
