Where I live, the driver gets the ticket if the passenger has no seatbelt. The car doesn’t move unless everyone is buckled in, because I’m not paying for someone else’s laziness.

Yeah here I’m pretty sure it’s the driver gets a fine and the passenger too if they’re over 16yo

The driver still has to pay for it, which is usually going to be your parents, who would probably be footing the bill anyways if you’re that young.

I misread it and thought that the driver got a citation for any adult passengers that weren’t buckled in but not minor passengers. The adult passengers getting their own citations while the driver getting the citations for unbuckled minors makes a lot more sense.

The other guy summed it up, but I’d like to add that children can’t be held to the same standards as adults. Still developing brains and all that jazz, which is why it becomes the adults responsibility.

And for good reason. A single unbelted person in the car is a serious threat to everyone else in an accident. You could end up paying for it with your life if you let it slide. I think the statistic is something like a 20% increased risk of death in an accident when a single passenger is unbuckled.

And I hate that “aren’t you a good driver” idiocy. Sure, but aren’t all those other drivers on the road the worst?

I’ve read some stories about this happening from people who work in the ER. Having someone else’s teeth pulled from your skull doesn’t sound like the best way to go.

I kind of wonder if these people understand momentum.

That’s interesting, in Germany aslong as the passenger is an adult it’s no longer the drivers responsibility whether that passenger cares about their own safety. The fines go up fast for children though.
