    The idea that politicians are meant to ‘listen to the people’ is a bit tricky. Because some people talk about what they believe and care about, and other people talk about what they are paid to talk about… and people’s beliefs are influenced by what other people are saying.

    So with enough money, ‘public sentiment’ can be whatever the rich want it to be.

    This is why good leaders need so sometimes go against public sentiment. They must lead the public to the best outcome rather than just listen. … unfortunately, a more common outcome is that they go against public sentiment in order to self-enrich. So that sucks.

    Our super-efficient machines of propaganda make it extremely difficult to have policies that aren’t focused on consolidation of power.

    I reckon a similar thing happens with the meat industry regarding the aggressive rabid vegans I bump into online.
