Dynamic pricing is the death of even the echo of the American dream. What’s the point of getting an education, working hard to advance your career, or doing anything else to advance your economic prospects? If the prices for everything you buy simply rise to cancel out any increase in earnings, what’s the point of doing anything to better yourself? Might as well just get the easiest lowest-stress job that lets you share a studio apartment with a few roommates, and just work that until you die.
Just wait until they link these to your position in the store, loyalty card, purchase history, credit score, heartrate, etc. Great future we’re heading to.
Target was doing a form of this with their app years ago via GPS tracking. It would show different prices depending where you were looking at the item. Their parking lot, at home, a Walmart parking lot/store, etc. I used to park at a Walmart to buy items in app to get the best price
The family that owns Walmart, the Waltons, are part of the billionaire class. Their workers are on food stamps. While Costco workers have 401k, and make $25-35 an hour. Depending on your state, that’s double the minimum wage.

It is about the e-ink labels. I don’t disagree that companies like Walmart will use it to be scammy, but I believe all companies should switch to those. I also believe there should be laws against dynamic pricing to avoid this type of issue.
When I worked in retail, we would have a team of 6 spend 4 hours going through the entire store to swap out every single price tag before the store opened. It didn’t matter if the price stayed the same because the tags had expiration dates and customers would get their panties in a bunch over it. The amount of plastic waste created by weekly and daily price changes is insane.
I included tax on price tags in my store for years here in Texas, and I rounded everything up or down to whole dollars, so no dealing with coin change. The customer knew exactly what it was gonna cost to walk out the door with my merchandise. They thought it was the best thing ever
That these stores find the sizeable investment of figuring out ways to mess over customers rather than just hiring a proper workforce at any wage, let alone a living wage, tells you how much more profitable it is to mess over customers.

If the price the item goes up from the point I place in cart and I get to checkout I am leaving the item and walking out without buying another fucking thing from Walmart.
My concern isn’t that the price of an item will go up between my grabbing it and checking out, my concern is that they’ll update the price before I ever see it, and I’ll pay 50 cents more for this box of graham crackers than everyone else. After all, Walmart knows that I buy graham crackers every time I go there, and they know that I’ve put up with price increases in the past. They know who and where I am from the moment I enter the store to the moment I leave.
There is nothing stopping them from bumping up the price of those graham crackers while nobody is in the aisle. I grab them while they say $8.59, and I pay $8.59 at the register. Someone else who tends to buy them when they’re on sale grabs them while they say $7.59, and we pay different amounts at the same time, because Walmart also knows what register I’m using and which list of prices to charge me.
Yeah your right which means I need to avoid Walmart altogether. Or fuck up the algorithm by never buying same things when I shop.
This just sounds like price gouging with extra steps.
I closed my walmart (and target, and amazon) account over a year ago. Never going back. Thrift stores and eBay for everything. Aldi and Food City for groceries. It’s amazing how easy it is to go without the latest plastic junk that will break in 3 months. I know some people have no choice but to shop these places, but some are just lazy and won’t try any alternatives.
Walmart’s digital labels have earned my local Kroger (Dillons for my Kansas comrades) several hundred dollars a month
