The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

I saw a pull on Mastodon and only 4% said that they were under 18

That is to be expected. Most teens are on mainstream media. They’re still young, their friends are there and are still not fed up of the ads and all the BS noise. When you start getting older, you urge for more than just brainless memes and social circle drama, so you start looking for new places.

I mean, I don’t want to use a platform to follow users, I want to follow a community. If the reddit exodus happened when I was a minor, I would’ve migrated to Lemmy too. Lemmy isn’t the same as Mastodon. A twitter style social media is just terrible, in my opinion.
