1: there’s people in the iranian government who think most americans have read de tocqueville. the global perceptions of us, even if they’re worse than 10 years ago, aren’t even close to reality
2: my comment was originally intended to be about perceptions of the quality of life in america, which i imagine most people still think is better than it is, rather than perceptions of our government and foreign policy, which are obviously pretty well known at this point. sorry, should have made that more clear clear
what is the year on that tocqueville quote? it looks like a still from VHS
EDIT:
Thinking about that time in 1998 when former Iranian President Sayyid Mohammad Khatami assumed that most Americans have read Alexis de Tocqueville. This is the polite Persian shade we love to see lmao
ah yeah that’s a good point. the rest of the world’s perception of Burgerland is still probably riding the coattails of hollywood films and tv shows etc. Probably it’s only been in the social media era of the last decade or so that the curtain’s being pulled back ever so slightly.
which i imagine most people still think is better than it is,
I think most people outside of the US still imagine the average American living like in a 90s sitcom, not even accurate back then, but far less accurate now.
cant wait for the world to see first-hand what a stupid and evil place the US is. it’s gonna do so much damage to our reputation lol
I think whatever reputation the yanks had was gone a while ago already.

I have to imagine he was being at least a little facetious, right? Surely he didn’t actually believe that.
yeah it seems like a backhanded way to say the opposite
ah shit i’m dumb, i thought that was recent (since the start of the war with iran) and unironic
