I saw an article for Star Wars Outlaws and it made me think of all the SW video games I’ve played over the years, starting from the original SW console game to X-Wing Alliance to Jedi: Survivor
My personal favorite? Star Wars: Rebellion, a PC-based real-time strategy game. What’s yours?
I want to say X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter, but if I’m being honest it was probably Dark Forces.
Dark Forces was one of the first FPSes to have true 3D not 2.5D. I remember specifically one mission where you had to climb on top of an elevator, and that felt awesome. Plus the way your blaster beams would bounce around the room!
Also, the original X-Wing was one of my favorite games of all time. I didn’t like TIE Fighter as much because the Rebel ships were a bit too bullet-spongey. I preferred shooting the hard-to-hit but easy-to-kill TIE Fighters.
Never got around to playing the later sequels but maybe I should go back to them on GOG?
The graphical and handling upgrades in X-Wing vs TIE Fighter put it a cut above either X-Wing or TIE Fighter, though the missions end up feeling a bit more linear and focused (one of my favourite things to do in X-Wing was ignore the mission brief and attack the Star Destroyers).
I have no idea where the series goes after that, though. The next Star Wars starfighter game I played would have been Rogue Squadron, which was a rails shooter. I didn’t for that at all, so I totally disengaged from that aspect of the franchise.
