I’m a short person. I’m also sedentary and classified as overweight but not obese. As such, my TDEE is around 1600-1700 calories. So, to lose weight at the pace I’d like, I have to restrict myself to 1200 calories a day.

My partner is taller, fatter and has more muscle mass than me. He’s talked about wanting to lose weight to get healthier, but when it comes down to it he won’t do anything. Which is baffling to me, because his TDEE is high enough that he could eat waaay more than me and still lose weight.

Ugh. It’s frustrating.

    You said it yourself, he is taller, fatter and has more muscle mass. Of course he has to eat more than you because he also burns more calories than you.

    If you would eat till you are full, and he would eat the same amount, he would still need more. And not because he’s a fatty fatty fatso but because more mass needs more calories.

    Maybe it helps to think about the fact that everything scales with size so while his target kcal for weight loss might make you fill full (or maintenance) but for him it might be as challenging as your 1200 kcal limit.

    Overall all you can do is do your thing, potentially introduce healthier habits like substituting rice with chick peas etc. but eventually he is responsible for his body. (I am also responsible for my weight gain).

      I went to the pub this week and had only alcohol free beer. It was surprisingly okay and calotype-wise i still managed to stay within my budget.

    It is a little annoying to see the volume of food they can eat but it’s always going to be annoying. I’m a little taller than average so my maintenance is closer to 2100 at the moment but I still look at my brother needing 2700 and get jealous. At the end of the day you’d both be hungry eating under your maintenance.

    So my partner is also taller, fatter, and has more muscle mass. We’re both trying to lose weight, and she set her pace to be twice as fast as mine, but I believe she still eats ~500cal more than me per day. So yes, it sucks.

    As a fellow shorty, I find it was such a game changer to add some weight training. I’ve only lost ~7lb so far, but my muscles have become significantly stronger and it allows me to up my daily intake bit by bit.

    Also, if 1200 feels unsustainable, definitely give a smaller deficit a try. The best plan is the one you can do, not the one that gets you to the goal the fastest.

    One thing to keep in mind: When the worldwide zombie acopalyse finally hits, you’ll be able to survive on crumbs much longer that your partner.

    So you got that going for you.

    You’re reminding me of a few larger women in my life who have said, when I talk about how quickly I’ve lost weight with intermittent fasting, something along the lines of “how easy men have it with weight loss.”

    It isn’t just the numbers on the calorie calculator that scale with size and biological sex. It’s also the hunger, because those are the basic needs. You need to be hungry to lose weight, and I’ll lose weight while eating more food than my wife because my very existence burns more calories, but I’m fighting the same hunger.

    I get annoyed at people who won’t try not because they’d have it easy, but because they would rather complain about their lives than do something about it.

    Yeah, I feel the same. My husband is also a lot taller and heavier than me so he can eat more. I also know the 1200 limit is just too little for me so I try to move more and keep my deficit smaller. The weight loss might be slow this way but at lewit is sustainable. And I enjegoing for an evening walk and lifting. It is doable at 1500 cals for me.
