I keep telling libs that at the very least, they need to have a heavy land value tax if they want UBI to work. Because then, if they decide to raise the rent, they’ll admit their land is more valuable and have to pay more in taxes. What are they going to do? Pass the tax onto their tenants? Raising rent is how they got high taxes. And if they try to ship their money overseas, well they can’t since the land is the tax base.

Enshittification does have a historic term: rent-seeking behavior. It’s all about taking more money without creating wealth. Even Adam Smith vehemently opposed this and called it anti free-market, since he wanted the market to also be free from lords.

Now, so much of the US economy is built around rent-seeking and now we’re all scratching our heads why China is kicking our asses, and our governments are so corrupt.

Spending a few minutes with an “apolitical” or even non-leftist person kinda shows you how utterly fucked we are lmao these people live to uncritically consume their slop at whatever rate they’re charged. Just a prime example of people who don’t know what is in their best interest

the maoist uprising against the landlords was the largest and most comprehensive proletarian revolution in history, and led to almost totally-equal redistribution of land among the peasantry

the english word “tax” comes from the latin word for “to owe” and originally taxes collected were land rents and they were called taxes because that was what you owed the landed lord to pay rent. the word “taxi” comes from the same root through “taximeter”, a device for measuring how much is owed.
