  • Helicopters leave the ground because God has gazed upon them, and became angered when He saw them among His beasts, on the lands of His creation. God then decided to expel the helicopters from His earthly kingdom to flutter helplessly in His skies. God did this to punish Man, whose hubris led him to climb into the unholy creation. The Lord would then strike down the abomination fluttering in His skies, condemning the heretics that had climbed aboard in the belief that they could fool Him.

    Thus the name “Jesus nut”.

They’re getting downvoted because they’re missing the point. It’s not about whether or not I can choose to do things the way I prefer. It’s about how newcomers exposure, and thus opportunity to get into these things, is limited. The arguments about cars or calculators don’t hold up for that exact reason: The existence of cars and calculators does not severely limit people’s exposure to the experience of walking or doing arithmetic.

  • Partially yes, as the EU has sanctioned Hungary, and also did some stuff to sanction Poland when the previous government went after the courts.

What makes stuff hard is that the EU is so fundamentally built on consensus that as long as a couple countries are backing each other it becomes functionally impossible to pass sanctions against them. Also, a single compromised country like Hungary can very easily become a big roadblock for the EU.

All this compromise is, by and large, what has made the EU so stable and robust. However it’s also turning out to be an Achilles heel when you have bad-faith actors infiltrating the union.

  • I don’t know how you got to “culture war and homophobia”? It’s literally a meme phrase that’s used (often sarcastically) in response to stories on the internet. Saying something is “fake and gay” is literally shitposting, I think interpreting any deeper meaning into it is a bit of a stretch.

Edit: I just realised that this is a greentext community… half the comments here are either fake or gay, and OPs post is most definitely both.

  • I believe it’s been documented that russias dead/wounded ratio has been as bad as 1:1 at times, and is typically around 1:2, due to bad access to battlefield care (tourniquets etc.), little training, and bad access to casevac. We’ve seen plenty of russians off themselves once they’re hit instead of waiting for help that never arrives.

Even if it is 1:3, I believe it’s common to assume that about 1/3 wounded are unable to return to combat. In that case, the ratio of “can’t return to combat”/“can return to combat” is about 1:1. Which means that out of the ≈1000 casualties russia is taking per day, at most ≈500 are able to return to the front.

This also means that out of the ≈ 1 000 000 casualties russia has taken, it’s reasonable to assume that ≈ 250 000 are killed, and ≈ 250 000 are crippled. And given the data we have, these are likely lower estimates.

  • I second this! I was in the US for a while and quickly realised that doing constant conversions was a PITA, so I learned some rough reference points in imperial.

I think it’s good to get some small and some large reference points, which make it easy to guesstimate other things based on what you know. Mine were (given in metric here):

    • A glass of beer is 0.5 L.
    • A big barrel is about 200L (0.2 m^3).
    • My walk to work is 3 km, a long hike is 25 km.
    • A very short person is about 150 cm, a very tall one is about 2 m.
    • I can deadlift about 100 kg, and bicep curl around 15 kg.
    • A potato is on the order of 100g, while a watermelon is around 2kg.
    • 70 C is a nice sauna, 25 C is a nice summer day, 10 C is chilly, 0 C is sleet-temperature, -10 C is powder snow cold (depending on where you live the colder temps might be more or less relevant)

Figure out some similar things for yourself, and it’ll be relatively easy to think along lines like “That walk was a bit further than my way to work, so it’s probably about 4km”, or “that box was heavy, but far from 100 kg, so it’s maybe around 30 kg.”

Bonus points if you try some guessing like that and double check afterwards to tune in your feeling for different measurements.

  • With the current state of things in Gaza, I’m starting to dream that European naval powers some day have enough, and send an aid convoy with a heavy military escort to Gaza.

I can’t imagine anything but support for a mission that is literally escorting container ships with food, water, and medical equipment to Gaza. And I can only dream about the reaction from Israel if a combined NATO naval force told them that “We’re delivering humanitarian aid. If you try to stop us at sea we’ll sink you, and if you try to shoot us from the air we’ll wipe out your airfields. Stand back and no shots will be fired.”

It would be a so unequivocally “good guy/bad guy” situation, and NATO has the military power to pull it off. Of course, zionists have infiltrated far too much of our political sphere, so it’s never going to happen…

  • There is 100% a strong culture for minding your own business and not bothering anyone here. By that I mean that approaching someone without having a good reason to do so is very much frowned upon. That doesn’t mean we’re anti-social or complete strangers to small-talk, but there are some rather subtle social cues governing when it’s appropriate to approach someone, and if you just mind your own business and don’t give any indication that you want to chat, there’s a high probability that no one will approach you or talk to you.

  • I second you on the point about a “perfect partner”. However I still think a relationship can be “perfect”, because a relationship is much more than just the two people involved.

As long as we accept that no realistic relationship is completely without conflict, I would say that a “perfect relationship” involves being able to work through the issues that inevitably show up. It’s something you build together, not something you just have.

My impression is that the current “dating economy” breaks this perception a bit, to the point where a lot of people end up looking for the “perfect partner” that they automatically form the “perfect relationship” with, and aren’t willing to do much hard work to build that relationship. I don’t think that kind of “perfect relationship” (without any work) exists.

  • Wrong is a bit hard for me, maybe because “every happy couple is the same, while every unhappy one is unhappy in their own unique way” (para-quote from Tolstoy I think).

To me, I know what I have is right because I honestly feel like every joy we share is doubled, while every problem we share is halved. It’s a cliche, but I honestly mean it. When I’m happy with her, it makes me twice as happy just to see that she is happy. I honestly feel like the greatest joy in the world to me is to see her be happy. Likewise, if something is wrong, I want to help her in a way I’ve never experienced with anyone else, and can feel in my whole body that we’re in this together.

This doesn’t mean that we never get mad at each other, but when we do, we’ve always ended up remembering that, at the end of the day, we’re the most important thing in the world to each other. Whatever issues we’ve had, we’re in it together to solve them.

To round off with Tolstoy: I guess “wrong” would be if any of the above didn’t apply for whatever reason, that reason being unique in every case.

  • I initially thought the same, but won’t immediately deny that there could be a correct use of motorcycles.

Most of the russians we see getting killed on motorcycles seem to be using them over longer exposed distances without other supporting units nearby. Then they’re hit by drones.

No matter how you move around the front, you will be exposed to drones. If these motorcycle units are used to quickly support an ongoing assault or defence, and are moved together with APC’s or have some jamming device with them, this could be a very preferable alternative to doing the same movements in an unarmoured car or on foot.

One situation I can imagine is initiating an assault, and then quickly rushing in motorcycle troops to support the assault. They’ll still be exposed, but you’ve created a situation where the enemy has to react to an assault force that is suddenly larger than they thought, and they need to choose between hitting the incoming support or the ongoing assault.
