It happened a few times, mostly with his students. Notably, though, both he and his later offshoot students would surround themselves with people who had similar tastes/views/concerns/insights and form little societies. You’re probably familiar with a great many scientists who wrote letters between each other to keep in contact and abreast of current research/learning. Freud was one of them, sending a fair amount of letters that are publicly viewable today.
