This is the heart of Reddit - total coordination of random users uniting for a common cause and message.
What’s the back story for using John Oliver? What did I miss🤔
I have to agree - this is classic reddit. Spez obviously couldn’t care less about namecalling.
-
The corp gets to use the CEO as a punching bag - which is pretty much his job description…
-
Redditors can feel good about upvoting a picture “sticking it to the man” while actually doing nothing - participating on a site that’s still reaming them
-
Buying all the reddit awards for the post, GIVING THE COMPANY THEY’RE SUPPOSEDLY STICKING IT TO MORE MONEY. Bullshit like this pisses me off after finding out the Lemmy devs pretty much make less than minimum wage with donations
Pretty sure most awards given are free. My account has a bunch of coins on it for some reason.
I thought the free awards thing stopped a while back. I’d be surprised if a lot of people still had them
I have thousands of coins on my account. Coins used to be way more plentiful before awards got enshittified.
People could also dump their already purchased coins into fuck spez posts to be fair. Just because they gave an award here doesn’t mean they specifically purchased it for that occasion.

I think John Oliver is just very memeable
It helps that he’s a great person.
Plus, he’s reacted to people using his image in unusual ways before. He has an absolutely hilarious episode where he responds to someone mass generating AI created art of him in love with a cabbage. He noted the AI did a poor job, presumably through lack of adequate training data, so he married a cabbage in camera to help provide said training data!
Also, he might run it on his show, which adds fuel to the Reddit bonfire.
Sadly, his show is currently off the air due to the writer’s strike. Hope it’s not so long that this isn’t ancient history by the time he’s back.
Janice in Accounting don’t give a fuck
Several subs had a vote and changed their rules to only allow John Oliver content. The vote was done to ensure the mods are not deciding over the desire of their user base as spez had claimed they do.
Why give money via awards to the website you’re protesting against?
loads of people collect them over the years for free
I thought you had to spend them within 24 hours
When they had free awards, you could only give one every 24 hours.
The awards that are “paid for” using reddit coins, you can buy those any time. And some of the awards also gift the awardee coins in addition to the award. So even if you never actually have money to reddit, you could still end up with reddit coins. And what better use for them than to highlight the protests?
I didn’t gave anyone an award, but i got a shitton of coins for only downloading and logging in with the official Reddit app 5-6 years ago.
I can’t wait for Oliver to talk about this on his show and spend some stupid amount of money to help the cause
Regretfully, his show is currently shut down in solidarity with the writer’s strike.
The writers demands seem quite reasonable and I hope that this conflict is resolved.
Yep, and I can’t think of a single time when a striking union’s demands weren’t reasonable. You don’t strike on a whim; that is the last option for conflict resolution, and you’re not getting paid for the duration of it. That said, you’re going to make damn sure that your demands are reasonable and are likely to be met as soon as possible.
Strikes are also very visible, so you are going to want public opinion on your side. Thus, you’re even more encouraged to head to the negotiating table in good faith. But, every time it happens, higher ups always try to paint the strikers as greedy, entitled leeches demanding a handout (almost as if they’re projecting 🤔 ).
Don’t the union leaders make money even during strikes?
Doesn’t US unions have money set aside for strikes so that they can support their members if there is a strike?
Don’t know. Probably changes union to union
Not more than the union members
No idea
You need to remember that even though the ceos aren’t angels, that doesn’t mean everyone else is
If you believe that only angels are on your side, you probably are a Jehova’s Witness.
r/steam is about water vapour, r/wellthatsucks is vacuum cleaners only.
Hahaha fantastic
r/interestingasfuck got a whole lot more “interesting” too…

Personally don’t pirate stuff, but gotta support folks who are leaving Reddit. So… here I am I guess?
It’s never too late to start pirating. I’m sure plenty of folks here would be happy to hook you up.
Not to apply any pressure, mind you. If you’re just here to soak in the pirate culture tourists are fine too. There’s probably a gift shop, take free copies of anything you find in there.
Eh. I’ll let the younger generation have their fun. These days I’m more interested in the technical aspects than the actual content.
-qBittorrent
-TorrentGalaxy, The Pirate Bay, 1337x
-Plex
-Mullvad VPN
-Prowlarr, Sonarr, Radarr
Yanno, just in case you wanna get your hands dirty, here’s a list of things you can Google. Listed in order of importance (imo).
Isn’t Mullvad considered a bad option now since it doesn’t allow port forwarding anymore? It still works in my setup but I thought that being able to portforward increased potential peers?
The one downvote is from spez.
What are we fucking Spez for this time? Well anyways, fuck that guy
That’s spez? He has kind of a baby face
The Schadenfreude is real :)
Sorry, can’t ignore it. Only a single d pls. Again sorry my german genes compel me to correct people.
Here we go!
Haha. Love this.
