I got a phone call from the TAFE people about that course I wanted to take. They scheduled a meeting with me for Tuesday morning for a pre-training review or something. I have to complete a literacy and numeracy assesment before then. I was nervous, but they let me know that even if I don’t score as highly as I need to, it won’t necessarily be a disqualification. They said that the LLN assesment is just their prefered way of assessing whether I could actually understand the work, rather than being a firm requirement. Wish someone told me that before, because being worried about failing is the only reason I didn’t leave school for TAFE in March.

I’m still worried they might not accept me though. They don’t list eligibility criteria besides the LLN assesment which I should pass anyway, but I just feel like I must look like a terrible student. Although I guess they shouldn’t care since they get paid either way

Your posting habits show a level of literacy well beyond many of your age peers. And apparently more than a quarter of Americans. You got this!

Yeah, it’s not my literacy I’m concerned about, it’s the math. I did a mock LLN assessment (BKSB) my school offers, and I scored a 5 in english, and a 2.9 in math. Apparently the equivalent BKSB score usually needed for cert III/IV is a 3. So I’m not too far off what’s probably need. But they’re different assessments

I have no idea what those mean. Apparently math is taught in a different style now. I used to tutor, would be useless. Er, I do know the guy who writes some of the exams, but tutoring would prob be a conflict of interest

A BKSB is an assesment used in high schools (at least my high school) that assesses where you are in math/english out of 5. I believe the general idea is that by the time you finish year 12, you should be a perfect 5 in both, 4 in y11, 3 in y10, etc etc. Most TAFE courses require year 10 levels of things which matches with a 3 in BKSB. I think that’s how that works, anyway. But TAFEs don’t use BKSB, they usually devise their own LLN assessments or buy one from another company I guess

I’ve not long done a LLN test. Even though I’m a nurse, maths hates me. But I managed the test fine, as I’m sure you will. Your posts here tell us you’re a pretty clever person.

Aw lol, the math requirement was my weakest. I scored 5 in English and 3 in Math, and still got into my TAFE course.

It isn’t a hard requirement, and anything math related can be taught. Don’t stress it. Take your time and don’t worry if you don’t know answer to a question. Just do your best :)

♥️ thanks Chiddy, I appreciate you! I didn’t actually know you went to TAFE, mind if I ask what you studied?

I actually start next month lol, cert III in Animal Care Services. But I applied in Feb and did the LLN already. I’ve done them before, iirc I had to do one when I did a short stint at uni a few years ago. And the many many “personality tests” that certain jobs make you do as part of the application process.
