I requested the community with this message:
I want to create a space for r/Bangladesh. The government in the country has shut down the internet and I want to make decentralized options more accessible for them. I plan to see if the moderators want to join here too. If a good community forms, I am happy to hand off the moderator role.
I am not in Bangladesh, and I can’t read Bengali without translation tools. I’ll love to have other people helping with content and moderation. If you are interested, let me know.
It is difficult to self host in Bangladesh but my hope is that this community will end up creating an instance there. After this community is running, I will reach out to people on other websites.
@Safipok@lemmy.ml if you are still around, I’d be pleased to add you as a moderator
I can be moderator if you want. I am from Bangladesh. Also, I don’t think there’s much interest in a dedicated instance. Most people in Bangladesh only use Facebook. Even Twitter and Instagram users are limited. Reddit users are even fewer. A community is doable, but I don’t think an instance can be sustained for long.
I find it interesting how varied the market share of platforms are in different countries. Any idea why Facebook is the top one in Bangladesh? Is it to do with infrastructure, culture, etc.? Why would a link agregator with threaded comments like Lemmy or Reddit not be popular?
Because of Facebook marketing with free phone which came with Facebook app preinstalled
Ah, that would do it, wouldn’t it?
Thank you, can you make a post or comment in the community so I can add you?
I see, we can focus on the community then and push for an instance if it becomes more appropriate in the future
And done. thanks
also done, thanks! Change any settings as you see fit
