    Bad article. Premise is that Toyota is getting more complicated compared to their ultra reliable 1970’s cars. But that hasn’t been true for over 20 years. By the 90’s Toyotas had all the features of any other car in the same price range.

    Toyota has been having problems with some of their engines that is completely unrelated to complexity of adding features. For example they switched to softer piston rings for fuel economy improvements but that has come at the cost of reliability.

    TLDR: Complexity. Over complicating the design of a car leads to more points of failure and problems as the vehicle ages.
