Nevermind the fact that half the fucking internet was using pepes in completely innocent ways.
The core of the problem is/was the ADL (Anti Defamation League) which likes to pretend they have the authority to proclaim anything and everything as a hatespeech symbol because like 7 people used it in a racist context.
With the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict they have lost basically all credibility and are now considered an unreliable source by Wikipedia editors.

It wasn’t pepe by itself, it was the clown pepe which was widely used in twitter and the like, before it became a fascist shithole.
Also reddit, r/frenworld, r/clownworld, r/honkler, and the dozens of subs created for ban evasion.

There was a surge of qnon junkies using pepe but idk if that kept going or not
