Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts will rely on Western aid and foreign investments. The country’s postwar path will therefore be determined not only by Kyiv, but also by Washington and Brussels, writes Iryna Nesterenko. While reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is crucial, the country is torn between the economic benefits of nuclear technology, and its national security risks

I suspect the economic benefits could be real in this case, as the Westinghouse reactors might primarily be a political tool to bind Ukraine to the US. (Otoh, 422m+100m USD won’t go far and would have to be complemented.)

Uh… since when is Nuclear green? It requires resources from below, is non sustainable, makes big boom when it goes horribly wrong, and contaminate everything that comes into contact with its resources/waste.

I hate nuclear, but decarbonisation goes beyond contemporary electricity production sources. Any industrial-society electric grid needs to deal with a future with increased local grid demand: volatile local supply (PV, wind) that is uncoupled from volatile local energy demand (heat pumps, EV). The EU would kinda benefit from mutual coordination, but on the other hand, US firms are being government-backed into selling uncompetitive nuclear energy that fucks up regional grid conversion.

Also, really? Selling nuclear energy into a warzone?
